CURA ORPHANAGE, KENYA
Cura Orphanage is in Nairobi, Kenya. It is a residence for children who have lost their parents to AIDS. Some friends and I recently visited the orphanage and it was an incredible journey. The children were incredibly resilient and so full of life, despite their deprivation. For more information, visit www.curaorphanage.org
- Our first day there…we brought them tee shirts to wear. I actually don’t know why they were holding up 3 fingers but I immediately took orders from them and did the same.
- We brought school supplies and the children crazy over the adhesive stickers. We wrote our names on them and then traded them with each other. I think I was Rick for most of the day.
- We sang the Hokey Pokey for an hour and went through what seemed like every single body part!

- My brother created stencils of animals to paint on each of their bedroom doors. They assisted, kept us company and kept us laughing…
- These smiles kept us floating.
- The children coming home from school for lunch and seeing the animals that we had painted all morning. Totally surprised them.

- Kigali, Rwanda. Visiting a women’s shelter who are all victims of the 1994 genocide. These incredibly strong women are piecing their lives together after losing nearly everyone in their family. They have found such strength and courage in each other. The woman in blue giggled and said, “it’s very hard to meet a man here.”
